The whole concept of development is interesting. They're called theories for a reason, right? After all, not everyone develops accordingly to, say, Piaget's stages of development. Or even Erikson's stages of development or Kohlberg's moral development theories. Sure, everyone goes through those phases, just not at the same time. If we were all the same and developed at the same pace, the world wouldn't be as interesting. Of course, there are many things that can slow down development such as Autism, but that doesn't mean that just because your child is developing at a slower pace, they have some sort of developmental disorder. In fact, some people develop faster than others, and that doesn't make them automatically a genius. It all depends on how your brain works and develops.

My niece is a pretty good example of this. I remember first learning about all of this in Psych, when she was about two. We had to do the very same thing we did in AP Psych - write down the ages in which a child went through certain stages. For a majority of it, I went with what I knew from being around her and the things she was able to do. Of course, she's only a year older now so I can't exactly compare her to much else from the chapter.
